Radon is caused from the natural decomposing & deterioration of rocks in the ground, which produces a dangerous gas, called radon.
Radon – you can’t see it, you can’t smell it, you can’t feel it, you can’t taste it, you can’t hear it, so why be concerned or worry about it. Radon is one of the best kept secrets in our home. It is that secret danger that sneaks in the back door & does its damage & we don’t even know it is happening. It is the 2nd leading killer in lung cancer resulting in thousands deaths per year. Many people are dying of lung cancers that have never smoked a day in their lives.
Radon strikes in old people, young people, old homes, new homes, apartment buildings & any building connecting to the ground, in the basement levels as well as 1st, 2nd, or 3rd floors of the building. We invite radon into our homes by creating a partial vacuum in the enclosed environment. This is accomplished by bathroom, stove & other types of exhaust fans & air evacuation methods. Also, a natural partial vacuum is caused from the draw of fireplace chimneys. This enables the radon to be pulled up through the concrete floor cracks, the crack where the concrete floor & wall meet, around pipes or any other openings in the floor. The big secret about it is you have no idea whether you have the problem or not until you test for it.
My wife & I had built a new house about 5 years ago. I had attended a class about radon & said to my wife, maybe we should test our home. Both of us remarked that we were sure there would be no problem in “our new home”. The safe level is anything below #4 reading when you test for radon in the air. To our surprise our home was 11.4. We took another sample & it didn’t change. So we had an air extractor installed to pull air from our drain tile – French drain system & within 2 weeks we had pulled it down to a safe level of 2.8 reading.
The moral to the story is who really knows whether you have the radon problem? The only way you can know is by testing.
You can rent one of our portable radon testing units for $30.00 for 2 weeks and a $200.00 deposit, that will be refunded when the unit is returned undamaged. Otherwise, it can be done by buying a radon testing kit at your local hardware ranging from $15.00 - $30.00 that will test and determine the amount of radon in your home. The test unit canisters are then placed for 3 days in the home floor level you want tested. Next, the test kits are sent, to be analyzed which costs $20.00-$25.00 plus postage. You usually get your results within 1-3 weeks.
We can speed up the process by renting you a unit that within a 24 hour time period can give you the radon reading in your home. While you have the radon testing unit, upper levels can be tested at no extra cost, otherwise it would be additional testing cost using another test kit. If you would come up with a reading close to #4 reading you can then buy a test kit to double check that the readings agree, whether or not you have a safe level. We did both tests in our home to double check that the portable testing unit was accurate. They agreed within 2/10 of a number.
The assurance of knowing that you are not breathing potential cancer problems into your lungs is worth its weight in gold, speaking from firsthand experience. If you are concerned for yourself and your family’ health, please give us a call or fax an order to rent the portable radon unit & your credit card #. For your credit card protection, please do not e-mail an order with your credit card #. We honor Visa & Master card. Action brings protection!
